The Indian Ocean in World War II includes hostilities from the Allied and Axis Powers during the Second World War. The campaign was fought by naval warfare, but also some airstrikes. Primarily sides were the British, Australian Royal Navies plus the United States Navy versus the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Kriegsmarine and the Regia Marina from 1940 to all the way to the Japanese surrender. The Ocean was crucial because it helped both alliances' war efforts.
