Withers, Western Australia
Withers is a beachside suburb of Bunbury, Western Australia. It is mainly a residential area with some small retail businesses.
The suburb was named after Frederick Withers, a former state MP and mayor of Bunbury. It was developed in the 1960s by the State Housing Commission as the Withers Housing Estate.[1][2] The layout followed the Radburn design, and construction ran from 1969 to 1975.
Withers has the lowest average personal income in Bunbury[3] and has faced social challenges over the years.[4][5] In 2011, there was even a suggestion to change its name.[2]
The suburb has two primary schools, which are Maidens Park Primary School, originally called Withers Primary School, renamed in 2012,[6][7] and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, opened in 1978.[8][9]
