History
The name "Nannup" comes from a Noongar Aboriginal word meaning "stopping place" or "place of parrots". The area was first explored by Europeans in the 1830s. A timber mill was opened in the late 1800s, and the town grew from the timber industry. Nannup was officially gazetted as a town in 1890.
The town has experienced flooding from the Blackwood River and several bushfires, but it has remained an important rural center. In 1928, bushfires hit Nannup, and firefighters had to battle hard to save the town.[1]
