History

Burnside was originally part of the traditional lands of the Wardandi people, the Indigenous people of the region. European settlement began in the mid-1800s, and the area was developed for agricultural use, including farming and timber production. The town is named after the Burnside estate, which was one of the early properties in the region. Over time, Burnside has remained a quiet, rural area, with its economy and community tied to the broader development of the Margaret River region, especially as the local wine industry grew in prominence in the 20th century.

Geography

Burnside is located around 5 km south-east of Margaret River, situated within a picturesque landscape of rolling hills, farmland, and bushland. The town lies near the banks of the Margaret River, which flows through the area and gives its name to the broader region. The region is known for its Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which is ideal for both agriculture and viticulture. The surrounding environment includes karri forests and other native vegetation, providing a serene and natural setting.
