Hughesdale is a train station on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. The two lines and this station are all part of the Melbourne rail network. The station is supposed to be in Hughesdale, the suburb of the same name, but it is actually in Murrumbeena, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (see History). Like Carnegie and Murrumbeena, Hughesdale is an elevated premium station. This means the station is on a railway viaduct (skyrail).

This station has a concourse on Murrumbeena Road and you can go to the platforms from escalators, lifts and stairs.

History

This station opened on 28 February 1925.[7] Hughesdale station was named in honour of James Hughes, the mayor of nearby Oakleigh from 1924 to 1925. The reason why Hughesdale station exists because he had wanted a new station here.[8] Before it was built, Hughesdale was a junctions of the Outer Circle line and the failed Rosstown railway lines with the existing Dandenong/Gippsland line. In 1977, the station building was rebuilt. The original station building was destroyed by a fire 2 years earlier.[9][10]

In 2016, the Level Crossing Removal Project said that the Poath Road level crossing was going to be removed. The station was closed in 2017 and pulled down the same year. On 25 August 2018, the rebuilt station opened about 250 metres (820 ft) west of the old station.

Because the new station was built west of the old station, Hughesdale station is now really in the suburb of Murrumbeena instead of Hughesdale.[11]

Platforms

The train arrives on Platform 2.

Hughesdale has one island platform with two faces. Hughesdale serves Pakenham and Cranbourne trains. Services to East Pakenham and Cranbourne go southeast towards Dandenong before splitting up. Services to the city run express to Anzac from Malvern and continues to Sunbury station.
