The ruins of Rafah in 2025

Rafah is a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip. It is on the border with Egypt. In 2017, about 170,000 people lived in Rafah.[1] Rafah's history stretches back to the Iron Age.[2] During the 2014 Gaza War the Israeli military attacked Rafah and destroyed more than 2,000 homes and killed around 130 people including up to 70 civilians.[3][4]
