Campbell River is a city in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on East Coast of Vancouver Island and is in the Sayward Land District.
The population of Campbell River was 37,117 as reported by the 2021 Canadian census.[1] Campbell River is known as the "salmon capital of the world" because of the amount of salmon in the area which is popular with fishing in the area. The city of Ishikari, Hokkaido in Japan was twinned with the city because of the important connection to salmon in both communities.[2] The mayor of Langford is Kermit Dahl.[3]
There is debate about the reason for the cities name but most believe that it was named for Canadian surgeon Samuel Campbell who was on board the HMS Plumper and worked as an assistant surgeon.[4] Before Europeans arrived, the area was first settled by both the Kʼómoks and other settlers from Coast Salish Indigenous peoples.[5] In 1792, Captain George Vancouver sailed to Campbell River on the HMS Discovery and HMS Chatham.[6]
