Tareste is a village in Hiiumaa Parish, Hiiu County, in north-western Estonia. It is part of the island municipality of Hiiumaa, and lies near the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Location and surroundings
Tareste belongs to Hiiumaa, which is the main island of Hiiu County. The island is known for its long coastline, forests, and many small villages. Hiiumaa is Estonia’s least densely populated county. [1]
Near Tareste is a protected area called the Tareste Landscape Conservation Area. This nature reserve covers 455 hectares and was established to protect the local landscape and biodiversity around Tareste and nearby areas. [2]
The nearby coast and countryside make the area popular for hiking, fishing, berry and mushroom picking, and enjoying quiet natural surroundings. [3]
Nature and conservation
Because of its location on Hiiumaa island, Tareste benefits from the natural environment typical for the region: forests, sea-coastlines, and a mix of woodland and maritime climate. The Landscape Conservation Area helps preserve this nature for future generations. [4]
