Péter Magyar (Hungarian: [ˈpeːtɛr ˈmɒɟɒr]; born 16 March 1981) is a Hungarian politician and lawyer. He has been the Prime Minister of Hungary since 2026. He is the President of the Respect and Freedom Party (TISZA), Hungary's largest party, since 2024. He was a member of the European Parliament between 2024 and 2026. He was a critic of Viktor Orbán and was a member of his Fidesz party until 2024.[1]
His great-uncle Ferenc Mádl was President of Hungary from 2000 to 2005.[2][3][4][5]
From 2006 until their divorce in 2023, Magyar was married to politician Judit Varga.[6] They had three children.
Magyar led the Tisza Party to victory in the 2026 parliamentary election, defeating Prime Minister Viktor Orban.[7][8] He was appointed Prime Minister by the National Assembly on 9 May 2026.
Controversies
An incident attracted significant media attention in June 2024, when Magyar appeared on the ATV program Egyenes Beszéd, hosted by Egon Rónai. During the interview, Rónai questioned Magyar about his earlier claim that he had never been invited to ATV’s programs. According to Rónai, the channel had invited him several times, but he had declined the invitations. Following the exchange, Magyar left the studio before the interview had concluded.[9][10][11][12][13]
In 2026, following his election victory but before his inauguration, Magyar attracted significant media attention after nominating his brother-in-law and personal lawyer for the position of Minister of Justice.[14][15][16][17] The decision sparked widespread public criticism and political debate. Amid the backlash, his brother-in-law withdrew from the nomination one day before the inauguration. Several supporters of the Tisza Party, including Lili Pankotai, also expressed concern regarding the appointment.[18][19][20][21]
