Meadowhall is a large shopping centre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. It opened in 1990 and is one of the biggest shopping centres in the United Kingdom.[1] The centre is near the River Don and stands on the site of a former steelworks.
Shops and facilities
Meadowhall has over 250 shops, restaurants and cafés.[2] The centre includes high street fashion, electronics, food outlets, and leisure areas. There is also a cinema in the Oasis Dining Quarter.
Transport
Meadowhall has a transport interchange next to the centre. It has a railway station, bus station and tram stop.[3] This makes it easy to travel from nearby places such as Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and central Sheffield.
The shopping centre is beside the M1 motorway, near junction 34. There is parking for thousands of cars.[4]
History
Meadowhall was built on the site of a former steelworks in the Don Valley. It opened on 4 September 1990.[5] When it opened, it was the second-largest shopping centre in the UK.
In 2007, part of the centre was damaged by flooding from the River Don.[6] It reopened after repairs and improvements.
