A garnishment is the means for collecting money judgments against a defendant by ordering third parties to pay money directly toward the plaintiff. Wage garnishments are a process of deducting money off employees' monetary compensation (including their salary); these types of garnishments continue until entire debts are paid and can be taken for any debt, however usual examples are:
- child support
- defaulted student loans
- tax
Wage garnishments can adversely affect credit reputation or one's ability to open bank accounts.
