Calcium phosphide

Calcium phosphide is a chemical compound made of calcium and phosphide ions. The chemical formula is Ca3P2. The molar mass is around 182.18 g/mol. It appears as a red-brown solid. It is used as rodenticide, fumigant, and preparation of fireworks and flares due to phosphine gas.[1]

Production

It can be made when calcium metal reacts with phosphorus to make calcium phosphide.

The balanced chemical equation is:
6Ca + P4 โ†’ 2Ca3P2

Reactions with calcium phosphide

When calcium phosphide reacts with water, it makes calcium hydroxide and phosphine gas.

The balanced chemical equation is:
Ca3P2 + 6H2O โ†’ 3Ca(OH)2 + 2PH3
