Bruce Wayne is a fictional character from the Batman movie series (1989–1997), primarily portrayed by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). Based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name, he is a wealthy philanthropist and industrialist, the owner of Wayne Enterprises, and secretly operates as Batman, a vigilante hero fighting crime in Gotham City. Bruce Wayne's character is defined by his tragic past—his parents were murdered when he was a child—which motivates his commitment to justice and his alter ego, Batman. He is known for his intelligence, detective skills, martial arts expertise, and use of advanced technology and gadgets.
Actors Val Kilmer and George Clooney replaced Keaton as Batman in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997) respectively. Both Keaton and Clooney reprised their roles in The Flash, which retroactively incorporates versions of them into two alternate timelines of the DC Extended Universe's continuity. Keaton's portrayal of the character was critically acclaimed and influenced subsequent interpretations.
