Yttrium barium copper oxide
Yttrium barium copper oxide, also called yttrium barium cuprate and abbreivated YBCO, is a type of inorganic compound. YBCO is a non-stoichiometric mixed oxide: it does not have a single chemical formula, instead depending on the ratio of the three metals and any oxygen vacancies.
YBCO compounds are named by the ratio of yttrium:barium:copper. For example, YBa2Cu3O7 is called Y123. The formula is also sometimes written YBa2Cu3O7−δ to show the oxygen vacancies.
Y123 was the first high-temperature superconductor to be discovered, as part of the mixed-phase compound Y1.2B0.8CuO4.[1] Single-phase Y123 was later prepared and patented by Bell Laboratories in 1987.[2]
