The Workers' Party of Hungary 2006 – European Left (Hungarian: Magyarországi Munkáspárt 2006 - Európai Baloldal) or just simply European Left (Hungarian: Európai Baloldal) is a marxist, communist, anti-fascist left-wing political party in Hungary. The party is a full Member of the European Left.[1]

History

In 2005, the Workers' Party had its 21st Congress, but the party's opposition did not accept it as valid. Before this, the Central Committee of the Workers' Party kicked out János Fratanolo, a member of the executive committee, and Attila Vajnai, the vice-president. The expulsion was called illegal by those involved and the party's ethics committee, but the party leaders did not fix this wrong decision, going against the party's rules. A series of arguments caused some members to leave and create their own congress led by Attila Vajnai, where they formed a new party called the Hungarian Workers' Party 2006. The party participated in the 2006 elections, but did not get significant results. However, in the 2006 municipal elections, the new party did better.

The legal approval of the red star in Hungary via a trial in the Strasbourg court can be connected to the party.

To set itself apart from the Hungarian Workers' Party, the party chose the name European Left (Európai Baloldal), which also serves as an acronym for the party, during its 2013 congress.

The European Left has often spoken out against Adolf Hitler memorial marches and other neo-nazi concerts and events, which in some cases were successfully stopped by the authorities or event organizers.
