Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, known in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: Exciting Life,[a][1] is a social simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the third game in the Tomodachi series, succeeding Tomodachi Collection (2009) and Tomodachi Life (2013), and is the first new game in the series in over a decade. It released on April 16th 2026.[2]

Gameplay

The game takes place on an open tropical island,[3] the player watches a population of Miis which they can interact with. The player can also view interactions between the characters such as fights, and eavesdrop on their dreams as they could in the previous game.[4] Unlike in previous entries, the game allows players to directly control what happens between Miis rather than relying on random chance for Miis to create their relationships.[5] Also, new options for the in-game Mii Maker allow customization for sections of the hair, along with many new options for facial features. This game marks the first appearance of ears on Mii characters.[6]

Release

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on 27 March 2025.[7] A second Nintendo Direct presentation on 12 September 2025, introduced the creation of Miis and their interactions.[8] It is scheduled to be released for the Nintendo Switch in the second quarter of 2026, thirteen years following the release of Tomodachi Life.[7][9] The Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with the game.[10][11]

When the game was announced, fans suspected whether same-sex relationships would be a part of the game.[12] Neither of the previous games had the ability to form relationships with Miis of the same sex, which started controversy. Despite officially talking about this decision, Nintendo of America did not add the feature post-launch.[13] However, they stated that if they were to create a third game in the series, they would "strive to design a gameplay experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."[14][15] It was announced on the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct that non-binary Miis and same-sex marriage will be available.[16]
