Saskatoon is a city in Saskatchewan, Canada. With a 2021 census population of 266,141, Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan, but is not the capital, which is Regina.
Located along the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway, the city is about 614 kilometres (382 mi) northeast of Calgary, 524 kilometres (326 mi) southeast of Edmonton, 261 kilometres (162 mi) northwest of Regina, 780 kilometres (480 mi) northwest of Winnipeg, 1,568 kilometres (974 mi) northeast of Vancouver, and 2,784 kilometres (1,730 mi) from Toronto.
The South Saskatchewan River flows through the centre of the city, and many people enjoy boating, biking, and walking in the area. The University of Saskatchewan is also in Saskatoon.
The name "Saskatoon" (in Cree: sâskwatôn, "Saskatoon") comes from the Cree inanimate noun misâskwatômina "saskatoon berries", which refers to the sweet, violet-coloured berry that grows in the area.
