Romeo and Juliet clause

Ford Maddox Brown: Romeo and Juliet

In most cases, having sex with a minor is a crime. Often, this is defined as having sex with a person that is below the age of consent. What is known as Romeo and Juliet clause, and sometimes Romeo and Juliet laws is what some counties have: If both people agree they want to have sex, and one is below the age of consent, this may not be punished, if both people have about the same age. These laws are named after the play "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare.
