Ranunculales is an order of flowering plants. Of necessity it contains the family Ranunculaceae, the buttercup family. The name is based on the buttercup genus, known scientifically as Ranunculus. Widely known members include poppies, barberries and buttercups.

Classification

The Ranunculales are members of the so-called “basal” eudicots. The order has several families, including Ranunculaceae (the buttercup family) and Papaveraceae (the poppy family).[1]

Evolution

The Ranunculales most likely evolved between 132 Mya [2] and 140 Mya.[3]
