Career
Before playing in the NHL, Schaefer played parts of four years with the Providence Friars of Hockey East. He had a successful time with the Friars. He was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team and the AHCA East Second-Team All-American.[1]
He was drafted 166th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2000 NHL entry draft. On August 19, 2003, Schaefer signed his entry-level contract to join the Sharks.[2] He was immediately sent down to play for their ECHL and AHL-affiliates Fresno Falcons and Cleveland Barons. On October 26, 2005, the Sharks called him up and Schaefer made his NHL debut, entering the game for the injured Vesa Toskala and stopping 12 of 13 shots in a 5–4 overtime win against the San Jose Sharks.[3] On August 15, 2005, Schaefer signed a one-year contract to stay with the Sharks.[4] On November 4, 2005, Schaefer stopped all 21 shots he faced in a 1–0 overtime win against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to earn his first NHL shutout.[5]
On February 27, 2007, the Sharks traded Schaefer to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2007 seventh-round draft pick.[6] He never played a game for the Penguins and was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
On July 3, 2007, Schaefer signed a two-year, $1.2 million contract to join the Minnesota Wild.[7] He never played a game for the Wild and was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Houston Aeros. He finished his second season with the Aeros, posting a 26–17 record with a 2.52 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. He was awarded the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award as being the goaltender with the lowest goals against average in the AHL.[8]
On August 5, 2009, Schaefer left North America and signed a contract to join CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He played out the rest of his career in Europe.
Schaefer retired from playing professional ice hockey in 2015.
