National dress

A National dress is a style of clothing that is widely recognized as representing the cultural identity, history, or traditions of a particular country, region, or ethnic group. It is often worn during festivals, ceremonies, official events, weddings, or cultural celebrations rather than as everyday clothing.

National dress can develop in different ways: It may be a traditional garment that has been worn for centuries. It may be associated with a particular ethnic community within a country. In some countries, there is no single official national dress because the population has diverse cultural traditions.

Examples include:

  • Sari in modern India (alongside many other regional traditional garments).

It's worth noting that "National dress" does not always mean "Official dress." Many countries have no legally designated national costume. Instead, the garments become symbols of national or cultural identity through history, custom, and public recognition.

In modern societies, national dress often coexists with contemporary fashion, and many people wear it only on special occasions while wearing modern clothing in daily life.
