Museum of Central Australia

The Museum of Central Australia

The Museum of Central Australia was in Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was a branch of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. It held a significant collection of natural history and geological items from Central Australia. It was also home to the Strehlow Research Centre.[1] The museum opened in 1991, but was closed in the summer of 2025.[2]

The museum was closed because the number of people visiting had gone down, and the cost of developing new displays was too expensive. The space will be used to allow for the expansion of the Strehlow Research Centre with its large collection of film, sound, archival records and museum objects relating to Indigenous ceremonial life.[2] The items in the collection of the museum will be put into storage in Alice Springs and Darwin.[2]
