The Musée Maillol is an art museum located in the 7th arrondissement, at 59-61 Rue de Grenelle in Paris.

History

In 1964, Dina Vierny donated Aristide Maillol's monumental sculptures to the state. Minister of Culture André Malraux installed them outdoors in the Tuileries. That same year, Dina created a foundation whose aim was to promote Aristide Maillol's work to the public.[1]

The museum was founded by Dina Vierny in 1995. On January 20, 1995, the Maillol Museum opened in a mansion in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, the Hôtel Bouchardon. The renovation, led by Dina Vierny and the architect Pierre Devinoy, took more than fifteen years. During this time, she renovated the basement to house the restaurant that had housed the Cabaret La Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons since 1951, opened by Les Frères Jacques and Pierre Prévert.[2]

The Maillol Museum covers approximately 4,250 m². In addition to the galleries dedicated to Maillol's work and the permanent collections, there are also rooms for temporary exhibitions.[3]

In February 2015, the institution entered a crisis following the legal liquidation of the company Tecniarte, which had organized all the gallery's exhibitions since Dina Vierny's death in 2009. The exhibition "Le Baiser dans l'art: from the Renaissance to the Present", scheduled to open on March 25, 2015, was officially postponed.

In 2016, the museum resumed its activities with a program commissioned by Culturespaces (Engie), which ended its contract in 2020.

In 2021, the museum's reopening was directly managed by Dina Vierny's heirs, with the support of the Belgian cultural institution Tempora.
