Michael is an American biographical musical drama movie directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan, and produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain.[1] It follows the early life of the American singer Michael Jackson, covering the period from his involvement in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the Bad World Tour in the late 1980s. Jackson is portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson and as a child by Juliano Valdi, both in their movie debuts. The ensemble cast also features Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

Plot

Childhood and the Jackson 5

The movie opens in 1966 with steel mill worker Joseph Jackson (Colman Domingo) ruthlessly pushing his five young sons into a musical act called the Jackson 5. Child actor Juliano Krue Valdi plays the young Michael, whose prodigious talent on lead vocals is nurtured under the constant shadow of his father's iron will and physical abuse. Under Motown Records, the group skyrockets to fame, forcing the family to move from a small house in the Midwest to an expansive estate in Encino, California.

Rise of a solo icon

As Michael grows older (played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson), he longs to break free from his father's controlling management. With the help of his mother, Katherine (Nia Long), and attorney John Branca (Miles Teller), Michael takes charge of his own career. He channels his creative ambitions to record legendary solo albums like Off the Wall and the record-breaking Thriller. This era is marked by his obsessive pursuit of musical perfection, his signature choreography, and his attempts to navigate intense global fame.

Personal struggles and public persona

The movie highlights Michael's duality: on stage, he is a revolutionary performer, but off stage, he struggles to make human connections due to his early loss of a normal childhood. His longing for a carefree life manifests in his obsession with Peter Pan, his construction of the Neverland Ranch, and his growing collection of exotic animals. The movie touches upon his changing appearance, his diagnosis and struggles with vitiligo, and his genuine devotion to his fans and charity work.

Culmination

Rather than exploring later-life controversies, the movie focuses heavily on the triumphs of his artistic journey and culminates with spectacular re-enactments of his iconic concert performances.

Production

Development began in November 2019, when it was reported that the producer Graham King had secured the rights to produce a movie about Jackson, with Logan attached to write. Lionsgate Films announced the movie in February 2022. In January 2023, Fuqua was announced as the director, and Jaafar was cast as Michael. Further casting took place from January to April 2024.

After delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, principal photography began on January 22, 2024 in Santa Barbara, California and finished on May 30.[2][3] After a clause was discovered in a legal settlement, references to the 1993 child sexual abuse allegations against Michael were removed, the third act was revised, and reshoots took place in June 2025, bringing the total production budget to $155–200 million.

Reception

The movie was released on April 24, 2026, in which has grossed $960 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2026, the third-highest-grossing biographical movie of all time, and Lionsgate's highest-grossing movie. Michael received negative reviews from critics, who praised Jaafar's performance but criticized the story as "sanitized".
