Controversies
Political dynasty background
Mark Alcala comes from the Alcala political family, which includes former-Governor Anacleto Alcala Sr., former-Secretary of the Department of Agriculture Proceso ‘Procy’ Alcala, his father, former-Mayor of Lucena Roderick ‘Dondon’ Alcala, among many others.
The Alcala family has played a significant role in the politics of Lucena City and the province of Quezon for several decades. During Alcala's mayoralty, his father acted as his vice mayor; running alongside him during the 2022 elections and subsequently being inaugurated into office. Alcala's rise to power was met with relative ease. During the elections, his campaign ran against relative unknowns.[3][4]
Alcala's rise to the mayoralty has been viewed by observers and critics as a continuation of the family's long-standing influence in local governance. This arrangement has been cited in discussions surrounding political dynasties in the Philippines.[5][6]
Alleged relationship
Mark Alcala has become the subject of public controversy following reports and circulating images that allegedly show Mark in the company of actress Kathryn Bernardo.
The issue drew significant attention online, with netizens citing alleged photographs,[7] travel sightings,[8][9] coinciding public appearances,[10] and even Mark's conduct online[11][12] as evidence. These reports, which were amplified by both entertainment media and social media platforms, led to widespread speculation regarding the nature of their relationship.[13] Amid the controversy, Alcala faced public criticism, particularly from residents and commentators who accused him of neglecting his duties as mayor due to his alleged personal activities.[14]
Neither Alcala nor Bernardo publicly confirmed the allegations.[15][16]
