Maria Pappas (born June 7, 1949) is an American lawyer and politician who has been the Cook County Treasurer since 1998. Before, she was a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 1990 to 1998.[1] She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Pappas ran for the United States Senate in 2004, losing the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. She thought about running for Mayor of Chicago in 2011, but chose not to run.[2] Pappas thought running for mayor again in 2019 after Mayor Rahm Emanuel dropped out, but decided not to in the end.[3]

In November 2025, Pappas announced her candidacy for mayor of Chicago in the 2027 election, running against incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson.[4]
