Manhunt (law enforcement)

A manhunt is a coordinated search for a person, usually conducted by law enforcement or authorities, who is suspected of committing a crime or who is otherwise wanted. The purpose of a manhunt is to locate, apprehend, or sometimes rescue the individual as quickly as possible.

Manhunts typically occur after serious incidents such as violent crimes, prison escapes, kidnappings, or terrorist attacks. Authorities may deploy large numbers of police officers and investigators and may also involve specialized units such as search-and-rescue teams, tracking dogs, helicopters, drones, and surveillance technology. In some cases, the public is asked to assist by reporting sightings or providing information about the suspect.

The search area during a manhunt can range from a small neighborhood to an entire region or country, depending on the circumstances and the suspect’s potential mobility. Law enforcement agencies often coordinate across jurisdictions and may use roadblocks, checkpoints, and media alerts to narrow down the suspect’s location.

The term can also be used more broadly in media and everyday language to describe any intensive search for a person, including in military operations or emergency situations. In popular culture, “manhunt” is also used as the title for books, films, television series, and video games.
