M4 Sherman

A M4A1 (76) W (a M4A1 with a HVSS suspension, a 76 mm gun, and "wet" ammunition storage), one of the many variants of the M4.

The M4 Sherman was an American medium tank that served during World War II and the Korean War. The early ones had an underpowered 75 mm gun, which could not penetrate the thick armor of the German tanks that it faced. Only their large numbers helped knock out the heavily-armored German Tigers. Most Shermans also had relatively thin armor, with the noticable exception of the "Jumbo" Sherman. The armor was easily penetrated by the 8.8 cm KwK 36, a German anti-aircraft gun utilized as an anti-tank gun.

Here is a list of some of its variants:

  • The Sherman Firefly, a British variant with a QF-17 pounder gun (the "pounder" designation of 17 means it shoots 17-pound shells)
  • The M4A1
    • M4A1 (76) W
  • The M4A2
    • M4A2E8
    • M4A2 (76) W
  • The M4A3
    • M4A3E8 "Easy Eight", a relatively famous variant equipped with the Horizontal Volute Suspension System and the 76mm M1A1 or M1A2
    • M4A3 (105), a regular M4A3 equipped with a 105mm howitzer.
    • M4A3E2 "Jumbo", an up-armored variant of the regular M4A3
  • The M4A4, a variant whose vast majority was supplied to other Allied powers as part of Lend-Lease.
