Line notation

Line notation is a text-based notation system using ASCII characters, where an entire chemical structure is written in a sequence of characters on a single line. It is most often used for chemical nomenclature.

Line notation allows for computers to quickly understand what chemicals are being represented. The computer converts the strings into two-dimensional or three-dimensional drawings of molecules.

Line notation can also be a word and symbol description of an electrochemical cell used in chemistry.
