José María Muñagorri Berraondo (3 October 1902 - 12 October 1968) was a Spanish footballer who played as a forward.[1] He was born in Buenos Aires to Basque parents, and moved to Madrid when he was three. He never played for Spain, but he did play for a Madrid representative team at the 1923–24 Prince of Asturias Cup, where they lost in the final to Catalonia.[2]
In 1927, while Real Madrid was on their tour of the Americas, the team docked in Progreso, Mexico. Because the boat was anchored far from the port, Muñagorri's teammates José María Peña and Juan Urquizu got into a small boat and rowed through the water, which had sharks in it. As they tried to leave the boat, Peña slipped into the water near the sharks. Muñagorri almost jumped into the water to help them, and had to be held back by his teammates. In the end, nearby sailors managed to get Peña to safety.[3]
