The Kingdom of Hungary (led by Miklós Horthy) joined the Axis powers (the alliance led by Adolf Hitlers Nazi Germany in November 1940, while various European countries had been fighting each other during the Second World War. Hungary joined Germany and Fascist Italy in the Invasion of Yugoslavia and annexed some parts of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia into Hungary. in June and July 1941, Hungary sent troops to fight in Operation Barbarossa (the German-axis invasion of the USSR) and were involved in battles with the German-axis armies where they won against the Red Army. Hungary was involved in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942 - 1943, but the axis armies lost that battle and had to retreat from the region. as the Soviets pushed the German-axis armies back to their main territories in early 1944, Germany invaded Hungary and occupied Budapest to prevent Hungary from joining the Allies. in August the Kingdom of Romania left the Axis powers and joined the red army and they managed to push the German-Hungarian army to Transylvania. in September 1944, the first Soviet-Romanian forces entered Hungarian controlled Transylvania as part of the the second world war in the balkan region of Eastern Europe. Germany sent troops to fight in the country to make sure Hungary would not fall to the Red Army. but Miklós Horthy (the regent of the country) had plans to join the Allies but fascist Hungarians and Germans stoped him from doing so and a puppet government was put in to power. and the war continued with Hungary fighting with Germany. the allies entered Debrecen and began the Budapest offensive. during the encirclement of the city, the soviets formed a pro-allied Hungarian government that governed the liberated areas of the country. in February Budapest fell and the next month the allies started the last offensive in Hungary that managed to liberate all areas of Hungary.
