Foreign advisors to the government in Meiji period Japan
Foreign government advisors in Meiji Japan (お雇い外国人, oyatoi gaikokujin; literally, "Imperial hired foreigners") were men and women who were employed by the government of Japan in the early Meiji period.[1] These western experts were invited to come to Japan to share their specialized knowledge..[2]
History
The oyatoi came from many nations. By the 1870s, they were employed in many projects of the government.[2]
The strategy of employing oyatoi was ended in 1899.[2]
