FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship
The FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship is an international volleyball competition for men's national teams. It is organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The first edition was played in 1949 in Czechoslovakia.[1]
For most of its history, the tournament was held every four years, alternating with the Summer Olympic Games. Starting in 2025, it is played every two years. In March 2026, the FIVB announced that the tournament will be renamed the FIVB Volleyball World Cup from the 2027 edition onwards.[2]
Italy are the current champions. They won the 2025 edition in the Philippines, beating Bulgaria 3–1 in the final. It was Italy's fifth world title and their second in a row.[3]
History
Early years (1949–1970)
The FIVB held the first World Championship in 1949, just two years after the federation was founded in 1947. Only European nations took part in the first edition, which the Soviet Union won.[1]
The second edition in 1952 also included teams from Asia. By the 1956 edition, teams from North America and South America were taking part as well. Teams from Africa joined in 1970, making the tournament truly global.[1]
The Soviet Union dominated the first two decades, winning six titles (1949, 1952, 1960, 1962, 1978, 1982).[4] Czechoslovakia won twice (1956, 1966), and East Germany won in 1970.[1]
1974–2000
From 1962 onwards, the tournament was held every four years in between Olympic Games. Poland won their first title in 1974 in Mexico, breaking the European stranglehold in a new way.[1]
The United States won their only title in 1986 in France, beating the Soviet Union in four sets. Players like Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons led the team.[1]
Italy then won three editions in a row — 1990, 1994, and 1998 — becoming the first nation to win three consecutive World Championships. Lorenzo Bernardi and Andrea Giani were among the leading players.[1]
2002–2022
Brazil matched Italy's record by winning three in a row in the 2000s (2002, 2006, 2010). The 2002 final in Buenos Aires was the only World Championship final decided in five sets, with Brazil beating Russia 3–2.[5]
Poland won their second title in 2014 at home, beating Brazil in the final in Katowice. They won again in 2018 in Italy, beating Brazil 3–0. That made Poland the fourth nation to win three World Championship titles.[4]
Italy won their fourth title in 2022, playing at home and beating Poland in the final. The tournament was co-hosted by Slovenia and Poland.[1]
2025 onwards
The 2025 edition was the first under a new format with 32 teams and a two-year cycle. It was held in two cities of the Philippines (Pasay and Quezon City) from 12 to 28 September 2025. This was the first World Championship hosted in Southeast Asia.[6]
Italy won the final 3–1 against Bulgaria, claiming their fifth title and second in a row. It was Bulgaria's first final since 1970, when they had hosted and finished as runners-up.[3] Poland beat Czechia in the bronze medal match.[6]
On 5 March 2026, the FIVB announced the competition would be renamed the FIVB Volleyball World Cup, starting with the 2027 edition in Poland. According to the FIVB, the change aligns the tournament's name with other major international sporting events.[2]
Format
The modern tournament has two phases: a qualification phase and a final tournament.[1]
The qualification phase runs over three years before the tournament. Teams play matches in their continental federation regions and in FIVB world ranking events to earn spots in the final tournament.[1]
Before 2025, the final tournament had 16 or 24 teams. Since 2025, it has 32 teams. The host country qualifies automatically, as do the defending champions.[6]
The final tournament is played in two rounds. In the preliminary round, teams are divided into pools. Each team plays every other team in its pool. The best teams from each pool go through to the knockout round (round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal match, and the final).[1]
