Eisenhüttenstadt
Eisenhüttenstadt is a planned city that was started in the 1950s. Today, about 25.000 people live in the city. Even though the current city was built in the 1950s, the city of Fürstenberg was started in the 13th century. Fürstenberg was built close to the current location of Eisenhüttenstadt. It is a part of Eisenhüttenstadt today. Between 1953 and 1961 the city was called Stalinstadt. The name Eisenhüttenstadt is a reference to the fact that there is an ironworks the city was founded for. The city is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the south of Frankfurt (Oder). It is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the north of Guben. Berlin is about 110 kilometres (68 mi) away. At the time the company running the ironworks was called Eisenhüttenkombinat Ost (or EKO); today, it is ArcelorMittal.
