Dieter Pohl (born 1964) is a German historian specialising in Eastern European history. As of June 2025, he has an h-index of 22 and an i10-index of 38.[1]
Education
Dieter Pohl studied history and political science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 1984 to 1990, graduating with an MA. Supervised by Hans Günter Hockerts, he wrote his PhD dissertation Nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung in Ostgalizien 1941–1944 ("Nazi persecution of Jews in Eastern Galicia 1941-1944") in 1995.
Career
From 1995 to August 2010, Pohl was a researcher, and then a department head, at the Munich Institute for Contemporary History. Since September 2010, Pohl has been a history professor at the Historical Institute at the University of Klagenfurt, focusing on Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
Expert witness
Pohl was an expert witness at the 2009 trial of John Demjanjuk, a former Sobibor extermination camp guard. Pohl testified that Sobibor was a death camp, the sole purpose of which was conducting the Holocaust, and that all Trawniki men had been generalists doing the Nazi jobs. Thus, if Demjanjuk was a Trawniki man at Sobibor, he must have been involved in sending the prisoners to their deaths and an accessory to murder.[2] Pohl's testimony, alongside other historians', proved decisive in convicting Demjanjuk.[3]
Research interests
His research interests cover the history of the Soviet Union; World War II in Asia and Europe; the history of post-1945 communism; 20th-century mass violence; Nazi occupations and war crimes; and the contemporary history of Poland and Ukraine.[4]
Appointments
Pohl is a member of the International Committee for the History of the Second World War, serving on the advisory board of the Kyiv-based journal Голокост і сучасність ("Holocaust and Modernity").[5]
