Cambridge University Cricket Club

Cambridge University Cricket Club was founded in 1820. The earliest known mention of cricket at the University of Cambridge is in a letter. It was written in 1710 by a Dr Bentley to John Moore (1646–1714), who was the Bishop of Ely. It includes a complaint about students being "absent from Grace" in order to play football or cricket. It is also believed to be the first mention of "Grace" in connection with cricket, but by no means the last.[1][2]

A team called Cambridge University played against one from Eton College in 1754 and 1755, but these were minor matches. In 1817, the University team began an annual series against Cambridge Town Club, which evolved into the original Cambridgeshire County Cricket Club. Cambridge University had first-class status from 1817 to 2020. Their first match against Oxford University was at Lord's in June 1827.[3]
