The assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay was a murder committed on June 7, 2025, in the town of Fontibón, Bogotá, Colombia, during a pre-election event in which the politician was participating. The attack was carried out with a firearm, leaving the senator and presidential candidate seriously injured. As a result, Uribe Turbay died on August 11, 2025, due to complications during his hospitalization.[1]

Overview

Miguel Uribe Turbay was a Colombian senator who, at the time of the attack, was aspiring to be elected as a presidential candidate representing the Democratic Center party in the 2026 elections, competing against four other candidates from his party.

Uribe was campaigning in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá. He had been invited by Fontibón Mayor Víctor Mosquera, a member of his party who had organized the tour. He was also accompanied by Councilman Andrés Barrios, also from his political party. The three leaders were accompanied by members of their political teams, their bodyguards, and members of the local police.

Shooting

The attack occurred in El Golfito Park, in the Modelia neighborhood. The attacker, a 14-year-old boy, approached the scene as a passenger on a motorcycle, got off the vehicle, and fired at least six shots at Uribe, hitting him in the head, neck, and leg.[2][3][4]

At least five other individuals allegedly participated in the crime, carrying out surveillance tasks using two motorcycles and a gray Chevrolet Spark vehicle.

Investigation

The Attorney General's Office and the Colombian National Police have launched an investigation into the case. The masterminds point to a network of hitmen. A video shown on social media about the minor's arrest shows him being restrained by Uribe's team and the police shouting "it was the olla guy, I'll tell you who it was, let me give you the numbers".[5]

In Colombia, a "olla" (pot) refers to an illegal drug dealing point, so it is inferred that a person close to the neighborhood where he lives may be the point of contact for one of the two "pots" in that area.

The attacker's cell phone was recovered days later, and the prosecution extracted clues about the attack, such as chats, photographs, and contacts of people linked to the attack.

The attacker's residence was raided, and clues such as notebooks and other evidence were recovered. Additionally, Uribe Turbay's defense team provided a series of additional materials with evidentiary value that could serve as leads for the prosecution.

The Colombian Attorney General's Office classified the incident as a political attack due to the parliamentarian's status as a sitting senator, a well-known member of the political opposition, and a presidential candidate.

The 14-year-old suspect pled not guilty in court on 10 June 2025.
