On June 8, 2026, at 07:37:40 PhST (UTC+08:00), a Mw 7.8 earthquake struck the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Its epicenter was off the coast of Sarangani province in the region of Soccsksargen, 26 km (16 mi) west-southwest of Kablalan. The earthquake was caused by subduction along the Cotabato Trench.[1] Tsunami warnings were done across the southern Philippines as well as in Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau, Japan, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.

At least 46 people died, 688 were injured and 38 were reported missing. Across Mindanao, more than 45,500 houses were damaged or destroyed.

The earthquake was the strongest to hit the country since the 1990 Luzon earthquake[2] and is one of the most destructive in the country in fifty years.[3]
